Juror's Statement:
My congratulations to all the members of the Idaho Watercolor Society
for producing such an artistic body of work. Many accepted works were of a
very high caliber, reflecting the personality and vivid imagination of the
artist's emotional response to his or her subject. This is what I, and many
other jurors look for in a painting. Viewing a fresh approach to a subject
reveals something of a painter's soul. We experience a dialogue without words
- the talent and perception of the artist paints the script. Many of the artists
in this show accomplished that goal while attending to matters of good composition
and splendid watercolor technique as well. While some may fall short of this
lofty measure, their work still deserves attention, and I hope their inclusion
in this exhibition will give further encouragement to continue his or her
strong beginning.
Undoubtedly, many are disappointed to
not be included. We all know the feeling and my advice is to continue to hone
your skills and look for uniquely personal approaches to your subject matter.
On a practical level, I must state that some works of possible merit were
passed over because the slide was of such poor quality. A slide should accurately
represent the painting by proper exposure, color and contrast. What's more,
it should contain nothing other than the active painting. This means no hands
holding the painting, no chairs or brick walls behind it, no mat showing around
the painting and certainly no glass ... nothing but painting, to re-coin a
baseball phrase.
It was apparent to me that everyone's
work came from caring about watercolor and art. For that reason, every entrant
deserves my compliments. To all those accepted, a warmhearted congratulations!
Your works will visually announce the Idaho Watercolor Society's commitment
to encouragement and growth in the world of watercolor.
Lastly, many thanks to the committees
and helpers who spent so much of their personal time organizing and assuring
that this exhibition would be a splendid one. Enjoy your exhibition and thank
you for entrusting me with your selections.
